Purchasing carpet can be a very confusing experience if you do not understand the terms widely used in the industry. We have listed below a reference guide consisting of the terms applicable to most types of carpeting. We hope that this will make easier your carpeting experience, because we believe that an educated consumer makes a happier customer. Antistatic: The ability of a carpet to dissipate an electrostatic charge before it reaches the threshold of human sensitivity. Binding: A band sewn over a carpet edge to protect, strengthen or decorate the edge. Cushion (Padding): Any kind of material placed under carpet to provide a softer feel underfoot and longer wear life for the carpet. Cut Pile: Carpet fabric in which the face is composed of cut ends of pile yarn. Density: The amount of pile yard in the carpet and the closeness of the fibers. (Denser the pile , the better the carpet.) Direct Glue Down: Carpeting that is directly glued down to the sub floor. Filament: Single continuous strand of fiber. Gauge: Distance in fractions of an inch between the points where the fiber is attached to the backing (Generally 10th is better then 8th gauge) Heat Setting: The process that sets the twist by heat or steam, enabling yarns to hold their twist over time. Loop Pile: Carpet style having a pile surface consisting of uncut loops. Pile: The visible surface of carpet consisting of yarn tufts or loops. Pile Yarn Weight: Mass per unit area of the pile yarn including buried portions. (Expressed as ounces per square yard.) Power Stretcher: Carpet installation tool used to stretch carpet over a padding and attached to a tackless strip. (All carpet installed with tackless strip must be power stretched to prevent wrinkles.) Stretch-in: Installation of carpet over padding or cushion using a power stretcher and tackless strip. Stitches: Number of yarn tufts per running inch of a single row. (Stitches per inch.) Tackless Strip: Wood or metal strips attached near the walls that have pin nails angled up toward the walls which the backing of the carpet is stretched and attached to. Tuft Bind: Force required to pull a tuft from the backing of the carpet. Twist: The winding of the yarn around itself. A tighter twist enhances durability.
